St. Peter is shown being forgiven by Christ, who ordains him to lead the early Church. This is the start of what later becomes known as the papacy.

Peter's symbol is two crossed keys, because Jesus gave him the "keys of the kingdom" of God when he commissioned his leadership (Matthew 16:19).
