The reredos, or backdrop for the altar, shows scenes from the lives of both Thomas More and Thomas O'Neill. In the center is Saint Thomas More wearing the chain of the Chancellor of the British kingdom.
On the left are Blarney Castle and, praying beneath it, Irish martyr Henry O'Neill (died 1651), painted here because of Thomas O'Neill's Irish origins. Also shown are the great fire of Baltimore (1904), showing Mr. O'Neill's store remaining unharmed by the flames; his sister who was a member of the Sisters of Charity, and a group of school children, suggestive of Thomas O'Neill's work as a trustee of Saint Mary's Industrial School in southwest Baltimore. The students are shown with one of the Xaverian Brothers who ran the school: George Herman, director of athletics. Two of that school's most famous pupils are "Babe" Ruth (George Herman Ruth, shown with the baseball bat) and vaudeville entertainer Al Jolson (shown with the book). It is thanks to Brother Herman's assistant, the 6’6”, 250-pound Brother Matthias (Martin Boutlier) who changed Babe Ruth's life toward baseball. |
