This bottom portion of the window of the Mothering Madonna shows Mary crushing the serpent beneath her feet, in fulfillment of God's promise in Genesis 3:14-15.
This window also depicts Eve, the mother of the human race, and Sara, the mother of the Chosen Race (through Abraham). They prefigure Mary's spiritual motherhood of Christians.
"Salve Regina" is the prayer:
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
V. Pray for us O holy Mother of God,
R. that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Click the photo to "turn around" and see the Glorious Woman window, which is just outside the Lady Chapel on the opposite wall.
