On the other side of the narthex are four Greek Doctors -- called "doctors" because of their profound and scholarly teachings, and "Greek" because they wrote in Greek.
 

Saint Gregory of Nazianzus was bishop of Constantinople. His panel shows him carrying the Bible and a Greek-type crosier. The vestment in the upper right corner is worn about the waist, hanging from the right side, by bishops of the Eastern Church.

 

Saint Basil the Great is shown holding the Greek church in his hands, because he was helped the Church fend off the Arian heresy concerning the true identity of Christ and defended the divine personality of the Holy Spirit. He also built a vast series of structures.

Saint John Chrysostom (his name means "golden-mouthed") is shown preaching, a gift for which he was well known. It also depicts a chalice, representing the priesthood, because he is noted for his writing On the Priesthood. At the base of the chalice is a bible because of his reputation as  an interpreter of the scriptures.

Saint Athanasius is shown with a symbol of the Blessed Trinity, whose true nature he vigorously championed. As bishop of Alexandria, he was the Arian heresy's greatest opponent.
