Using Your God-Given Intelligence in an Artificial World

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common in our daily lives. We hear about it often in the news, but what exactly is AI? Simply put, it is technology designed to make computers “smart enough” to think, learn, and act in ways that assist humans. While it may sound like something from science fiction, AI is already shaping the way we live. It recommends shows on Netflix, provides real-time traffic updates through Google Maps, and even assists with driving by helping us avoid accidents.

AI can make our lives more convenient and comfortable, but it can also present a danger. Human intellect is a precious gift; we are made in the image and likeness of God. For this reason, we should never strive to create machines that equal or surpass human reason and intelligence.

AI can also be misused to deceive people—spreading false information, imitating voices, or generating fake images and videos. Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, MN, recently shared how AI was used against him, creating misleading content that attacked his work and ministry.

In a video addressing this issue, Bishop Barron encourages viewers to use logic and discernment when encountering online content. Here are some key ways to spot AI-generated material:

  • Check the source. Is the video or message posted on the official channel of the person or organization? Are trustworthy sources confirming the same information?

  • Watch carefully. If the person is on camera, does the audio match their mouth movements? If the video relies heavily on graphics or the sound seems out of sync, it may be AI-generated.

  • Consider consistency. Does the message align with the long-standing values of the speaker or organization? If someone known for faithful, gospel-centered teaching suddenly appears to promote the opposite, it may be deceptive AI content.

As technology continues to advance, it will become easier to be misled. That is why it is essential to use prayerful discernment, reason, and critical thinking when evaluating what you see and hear online. Most importantly, remember that we are created in God’s image and likeness—never surrender your intellect to machines or rely blindly on computer-generated information.

The next time you feel overwhelmed by the latest technological trend or cultural fad, remember these words from Scripture:

Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2).”
