The Light in the Darkness

This past weekend, in 70 countries—including most of the United States—clocks sprang forward into “Daylight Saving Time.” This practice seeks to conserve daylight hours so we can spend more of the warmer summer months enjoying the light. We trade one less hour of sleep in early spring for a summer full of beautiful evenings to recreate with our families. Is it worth it? It is often debated, but whether you like it or not, it can serve as a great reminder of how we are supposed to approach this Lenten season.

Scripture reminds us: “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we continue to walk in darkness, we lie and do not act in truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son, Jesus, cleanses us from all sin.”

During the Lenten season, we strive intentionally to spend more time in the light and rid ourselves of the darkness of sin. We make little sacrifices to try to “skip an hour ahead” and grow closer in our relationship with God. This is not easy and is a lifelong process. Knowing this, the Church, in her great wisdom, instituted the annual liturgical season of Lent—a time to make sacrifices that banish the darkness and move us toward the light.

I encourage you to reflect this week on two questions. First, in what ways have you made a special effort to walk in the light this Lent? Second, what can you do to ensure that those special practices become a permanent part of your relationship with God?

Remember that the end goal of growing spiritually is union with God. If the devotions and practices we are currently employing in our lives aren’t moving us closer in relationship with God, then try something new. Don’t be afraid to adjust things as you continue to grow. If you need help, GNM.org has many resources, reflections, courses, and videos to support you in your lifelong pursuit of the light.

May God continue to bless you and your families.
