Preparing for Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday Mass is one of my favorite liturgical celebrations. I particularly enjoy the celebration because of an insight I received from Bishop David Malloy, the Bishop of Rockford, Illinois, several years ago at the beginning of the Palm Sunday Mass. After the processional song, he said, “Think about what we have just done – we just gave God a moment of perfect praise and reenacted Christ’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. God is pleased.”

While the lengthy Passion narrative often takes center stage and at times tests our attention span, it is easy to miss what we celebrate on Palm Sunday. Yes, it is the beginning of Holy Week, but how does Holy Week begin in scripture? It begins with Jesus being worshipped and adored as God as he enters Jerusalem for the final time. Scripture says, “and now as He was approaching the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy for the mighty deeds they had seen (Luke 19:37).

For a brief and fleeting moment, we can catch a glimpse and experience a foretaste of the heavenly throne room. God made us to spend eternity with Him in perfect unity, so when we praise and worship Him, we surrender our lives. This enables God to align our purpose with His plan, and we no longer live for our own selfish ambitions, goals, or desires.

When you attend Mass this Sunday, I encourage you to listen attentively to the Gospel reading that precedes the entrance procession and worship Jesus. You’ll be amazed at how your union with God grows, and you’ll live less for yourself and with a stronger desire to do God’s will. If that desire bubbles up in your soul this weekend but you are unsure about how to discern His will for your life, I encourage you to get a copy of new ministry discernment workbook Knowing God’s Will and Doing it Well authored by Terry Modica. It will help you both discover and implement God’s will in your life.

May you and your family have a blessed Holy Week.
