The Eucharist: The Best Part of Life
Has anyone ever asked you, What is the best part of life? Did you struggle to answer, fumbling as you muddled it over? Maybe it’s your marriage, spending time with your children, or family. You may have attempted to include your relationship with God in your answer, but doing so seemed difficult to articulate.
Well, you no longer need to wrestle with this question. The Church has provided you with a clear and concise answer. The Catechism states: “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it (CCC 1324).”
Do you find it difficult to believe that consuming the Eucharist is the best part of your life as a Catholic Christian? Many of us take it for granted and think it is just part of going to Mass each week. But when you pause and reflect upon the power of adoring and receiving the Eucharist, it makes walking on water seem like a stroll on the boardwalk.
So why is the Eucharist the best part of life? The Eucharist is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus. The Catholic (and Orthodox) Church is the only religion on the face of the planet that understands that God is still physically present – Jesus physically resides in every tabernacle around the world. We adore the Eucharist and the incarnate presence of God with great reverence in the Church, but God doesn’t want us to stop there. He commands us to “take, eat, and drink” His flesh and blood. God loves you so much that He wants to dwell within your heart and soul.
The Eucharist is the totality of God’s love for you contained in a piece of consecrated bread. While this may be beyond our human comprehension, it is certainly the best part of our lives because we receive that love in its fullness.
One of the ways that Good News Ministries can assist you as you contemplate the Eucharist is with Terry Modica’s book My Soul Shall Be Healed, which is a five-part study of Pope Saint John Paul II’s encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia (The Church of the Eucharist). Terry unpacks this encyclical and makes it accessible and applicable to your everyday life. It is a great way to ponder the best part of your life on this feast of Corpus Christi, so you don’t fumble the answer when asked what is the best part of your life.
May the heart of Jesus, in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time. Amen.
