How to Experience Miracles…Be Ridiculous

When Mother Angelica, the foundress of EWTN, began the worldwide Catholic Radio and TV network, she posted a sign in her Studio garage. It read: You must do the ridiculous to experience the miraculous.  She thought it was crazy that God was calling a nun with absolutely no training in media production to start a radio and TV station. However, she listened to the Holy Spirit and did what He asked, then God worked a miracle through her fidelity. Today, the Eternal Word Television Network serves billions of Catholics on every continent.

If you think a nun starting a media network is ridiculous,  what about building a gigantic boat in the desert? Noah’s neighbors came home morning after morning, intoxicated from partying all night, ridiculing him for foolishly building an ark in his backyard. But Noah continued listening to God, doing what He asked. Then, when the rain didn’t stop for 40 days and nights, God’s plan didn’t seem so ridiculous.

From Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac to a young boy giving Jesus his lunch to feed five thousand, God asks us to trust Him. While it might seem ridiculous, following His will shows God that we are humble and trust Him above all. With that trust, God works through us to multiply descendants like the stars, fill the bellies of many hungry people, and so much more.

Reflecting on the last six months of my life, I’ve said “yes” a few times to God’s wild plan. Ten minutes after getting rear-ended in an auto accident that permanently ended my opportunity to drive Rideshare for a living, the Holy Spirit inspired me to call Good News Ministries and ask to work on a full-time basis – they said yes. But that meant the Good News Ministries team would have to radically trust God with their finances.

Then, less than a week later, the Archbishop of Milwaukee appointed me as the Liaison to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for the archdiocese – I said yes. It’s as if God could see my immediate need to provide for my family and just took care of it.

But the miracle doesn’t end there, through my “yes” to both positions, He is opening all kinds of doors for Good News Ministries to grow. New ideas and opportunities for GNM to collaborate with other ministries,  produce new podcasts, or even host pilgrimages have been presenting themselves daily.  If I had shut the door and said no to either position, these growth opportunities would not exist.

Is God asking you to do something that seems ridiculous? If so, I encourage you to say yes—even if it seems crazy—build your boat in the desert and trust God to give you enough water to make it float. He did it for Noah, and He’ll do it for you because He desires to work great and mighty miracles through your trust in Him.

I pray you have the grace to be ridiculous for God this week.
