The narthex is a vestibule or small reception area on the way into the main part of the Church. The word "narthex" comes from Greek, meaning "a small case." It comes to us from the Byzantine era as an antechamber to the nave (main room) of the church. Here, candidates for baptism and penitents attended Mass until they reached or returned to full union with the Church. This is why our baptistry is off the side of the narthex.
