Come Holy Spirit
This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost, or the Birthday of the Church. The coming of the Holy Spirit, our Advocate and helper is worth celebrating, for without His presence acting within our hearts responding to the Gospel and God’s grace would be impossible.
At the end of His earthly mission, Jesus calls the apostles together before His ascension and gives them very clear instructions. “While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the father which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5).” Jesus tells them to wait for the Holy Spirit – He is coming and He is necessary for the fulfillment of the Kingdom.
I think we often overlook that Jesus asks the Apostles to wait. The human heart is impatient and is often tempted to move on quickly. However, the reward for waiting is great. “You will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).”
Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, Jesus desires to make the apostles active participants in His mission to ransom souls from death, not merely be bystanders. What is even more incredible is that almost 2000 years later the faith has been handed on generation after generation to through the power of the Holy Spirit working through the Church and the sacraments instituted by Christ.
Our annual celebration of Pentecost is a reminder that God not only makes it possible for us to respond to His grace through the Holy Spirit, He expects us to employ the power of the Holy Spirit and spread the Good News.
