Is Jesus King of Your Life?

Is Jesus the King of Your Life? This is an important question to ponder as we celebrate the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, this weekend. I believe the Church strategically places this feast of Christ the King on the eve of the new liturgical year to help us evaluate how well we’ve given Jesus supremacy in our lives each year.
In our human experience, there are many ups and downs throughout the course of a year. We experience joyful and painful moments, and the Church, in her genius, through the institution of various liturgical seasons, mirrors the joys and sorrows we encounter by reflecting on the entire life of Christ from the manger to the empty grave. It also reminds us that we are not alone. Jesus does not abandon us in our current season of life, whether it be painful, joyful, or somewhere in between.
As you’ll hear in Sunday’s Gospel, the example we are to follow is that of St. Dismas, the repentant thief. His situation was far from ideal. He was dying on a cross, justly condemned to death because of His criminal and sinful actions. However, in the most difficult and painful moment of his life, He honored Jesus as his Lord and repented. As a result, Jesus promised Him a place with Him in heaven.
So, this feast of Christ the King gives us time to pause and ask ourselves, were we faithful to the Lord? Did we honor Him as our Lord and Savior through all the seasons of our year? Remember, the reward for repenting of the times we’ve failed to enthrone Jesus in our hearts is Heaven.
By intentionally reflecting upon the Kingship of Jesus, we will prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord as Advent begins, and we are once again offered a fresh start at the beginning of the liturgical year.
