August 13 – Saints Pontian and Hippolytus

Sts Pontian and Hippolytus

listenO Sacred Jesus, Saint Hippolytus (d.236) began his life in the Church as a heretic.  When Pope Pontian (d. November 19, 235) was sent into exile, Hippolytus replaced him.  He broke away from the Church and took many Catholics with him.  Later, they met and Hippolytus was so touched by the Pope’s humility, it converted him.  I ask both of them to pray for the pope we have today, for the cardinals and others who assist him, for bishops and for their priests and laity whom they shepherd.  Lord, strengthen unity within the Church.  Help us to serve You in obedience to those You have placed in authority over us.  Saints Pontian and Hippolytus, pray for us.  Amen.
