The Lord Has Need of It

“The Lord has need of it” is a phrase that precedes the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, found in St. Luke’s Gospel (Luke 19:28-40). In my prayer this week, I’ve been reflecting on this phrase and its context quite a bit.

In the Gospel, Jesus sends two of His disciples ahead of Him to look for a colt to ride into Jerusalem. He instructs them where to find it and tells them that if anyone asks why they are taking it, they should reply, “The Lord has need of it.” Sure enough, the two disciples find the colt just as Jesus said. When the owners inquire why they are untying it, the disciples respond, “The Lord has need of it.”

This story teaches us a lot about how God views our unique giftedness. It’s also a powerful example of how we are called to freely offer these gifts to the Lord. Before we were conceived, God knew exactly how we would look, speak, and act. Through the Prophet Jeremiah, He reminds us: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you” (Jeremiah 1:5). In His omniscience, God knew our interests, strengths, and weaknesses. He saw you completely and couldn’t imagine the world existing without you — so He created you to unleash your unique gifts upon it.

Just like the colt, which had never carried anyone before, the gifts God has given you are uniquely yours. No one else can fulfill the mission God has entrusted to you. Simply put, the Lord has need of you.

It’s also important to reflect on the disposition of the owners. When they were told that the Lord needed the colt, they didn’t demand to know exactly how Jesus planned to use it, when it would be returned, or whether it ever would be. They simply gave it — freely, without hesitation.

If a fellow disciple recognized your unique spiritual gifts and was sent by the Lord to untie them so that God could use them freely, would you permit it — without asking any further questions?

Good News Ministries needs prayer support for our protection and growth. We have a group of intercessors called 7 Warriors of the Cross who pray daily for our projects, our team, and their families. Because we are on the front lines, knocking down the gates of hell to rescue people with the truth and love of Christ, we need more warriors to intercede for us.

Will you employ your unique spiritual gifts, help us fight evil head-on, and intercede for GNM by joining a 7 Warriors of the Cross team?

The Lord has need of it.
