Why God does not see you as an unholy wretch

A saint is anyone who truly wants to follow Jesus to Heaven. Therefore, you are a saint!

However, Jesus points out in Luke 18:9-14 that if we do all the right things but proclaim it and use it as proof that we are okay, we are prideful. A truly saintly person knows that he or she can be tempted to sin and therefore continually relies on strength from the Holy Spirit while putting real effort into growing in holiness.

In Hosea 6:1-6, we’re reminded that, until we’re healed by God’s forgiveness, we’re afflicted by the consequences of our sins and a poor self-image. We want to be Christ-like, but we feel wretched.

However, the fact is, God doesn’t look at us and see ugly wretches. No, when he looks at us, he sees Jesus on the Cross in his affliction. He who never sinned took our sins upon himself.

By placing yourself behind Jesus, God our Father sees a holy child who wants to be free of sin. He is very pleased with you. So be the saint that you truly are by going to Confession to receive supernatural grace. And ask Jesus to give you the power of his Holy Spirit to overcome your sins and to avoid them in the future.
