January 23 – Saint John the Almsgiver

Saint John the Almsgiver

Generous God, Saint John the Almsgiver used to say: “If we are able to enter the church day and night and implore God to hear our prayers, how careful we should be to hear and grant the petitions of our neighbor in need.”  Transform my attitude toward the poor and all those who have needs.  Increase in me a desire to give to those who can benefit from what I have.  Teach me to hear what others are really asking, to identify what I can give that would help, and to find a loving way to grant it.  I want to become as generous as Saint John the Almsgiver in being the steward of Your gifts as an answer to their prayers.  Saint John, pray for me.  Amen.

Quotes for Today

Blessed Nikolaus Gross (1898-1945)

quoteThe majority of great enterprises result from daily fulfillment of one’s duty in small, everyday things. What is valuable in the doing is our special love for the poor and the sick.”

Blessed Henry Suso (1295-1366)
Feast day January 23

quoteIt is not God’s will that we should abound in spiritual delights, but that in all things we should submit to His holy will.”

quoteIn order to shun temptations, renounce all vain thoughts and think of Jesus only, resolving to know and love Him. After you have accustomed yourself to think of Him alone, any thoughts not relating to Him will be unwelcome and painful to you.”
