We All Need Help Carrying Our Crosses
By Bill Snyder (Media Director)
Does the stress of life overwhelm you at times? You are not alone!
If you were to look at our “GNM Staff” group text message chain over the last few weeks you’d probably be surprised at the many personal difficulties nearly all of the GNM staff and board have been suffering.
First, on March 7th, Graciela (our Assistant Director) and Fernando (her husband and our Spanish Media Director) suffered a wicked 3-day rain storm that flooded the entire first floor of their home and ruined all their furniture. Terry has been battling a torn meniscus in her knee and bursitis in her leg (possibly a hip problem too), and it has been painful to walk and difficult for her to find a comfortable position for her work. Board member Beth’s husband hit a deer with his car, and both Terry and Beth have been dealing with insurance adjusters to repair hurricane and tornado damage to their homes. Kathy (Donor Care Assistant) is grieving that her dog is dying. My Dad received devastating news that the cancer he’s been battling aggressively moved to his lungs. I was rear-ended and suffered minor injuries in a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident. Fernando was assaulted by a driver with road rage who punched him in the face three times and fractured his jaw. To top it off Terry fell and broke her wrist a few days ago and is now unable to type for the next six weeks (thus I have been commissioned to write this and several forthcoming newsletters).
All of this has happened to our team within about three weeks, and yet GNM continues to spread the Gospel. Perhaps that is what has me most amazed about our terrible and collective misfortunes and mishaps. God is still present and working. Amid our sufferings God has put Simon of Cyrenes and St. Veronicas in our paths to help us carry our crosses. Handymen have repaired waterlogged wheelchairs and prepared meals, and a priest willing to upend his plans and go out of his way to anoint and pray with my Dad. These are just a few examples of heroic self-sacrifice that has eased our pain.
Over the last few weeks, GMN staff have certainly been living a “road to Calvary” experience, but we know we are not alone. We are supported by many who are willing to help bear our burdens and prayerfully support our ministry — including you.
Do you find yourself along the road to Calvary with us this Lenten season? If so, remember to place all your trust in Jesus, and by doing so you too shall triumph over the cross. Christ himself assures us:
“I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33 NABRE)
