Ugly destruction is becoming new beauty

In the morning daylight after Hurricane Milton, I awakened to find 17 trees in my beautiful woods had been destroyed — including one of my favorite “grandfather” oaks.

Many-a-time I had mowed circles around its huge base. Now it was pulled out by its roots from a super-saturating rain and strong winds. It was a sickening sight to view.

I called Robert, my tree guy, to get a price quote for removing the destruction. He’s been my tree guy for the last few years. Ralph and I have always talked to our contractors like friends; it’s how we revealed Jesus to them and it opened faith-based conversations. When Robert learned of Ralph’s passing, he became visibly upset. Other workers had the same reaction. My bug guy even cried!

Anyway, because Robert knew we cared about him, he cared about us. Now that I’m a widow, he frequently asks how he can help. When I showed him my fallen trees, he gave me a huge discount. His crew worked hard for two days to get most of the destruction cleared.

They couldn’t budge the big, old oak tree, so it’s now a “feature” of my yard. You can walk under it and discover a new kind of beauty in it. It’s a daily reminder that death and destruction are not enemies; they are the beginnings of new life — a new era of life.

Walk through the remnants of this massive tree and you will discover a path. This is part of my dream for the future mission of my house. With the help of the Eagle Scouts in my church, there will soon be a Rosary Walk with sign posts on what to  pray.

Before new beginnings there are always endings. In my case, a dumpster full of stuff that had been ruined by floodwaters. Much of it is from Ralph’s garage, workshop and office. I had not been emotionally ready to sift through it yet. But Milton’s flood forced the issue. I needed to hire a professional sanitizing and restoration crew. Although it cost quite a lot, it was a blessing to be able to look away while someone else did the sifting.

There’s still more work to be done. And it’s all leading up to realizing that it’s not only you and me who have missions for spreading the Good News; it’s our homes too. What do you think the mission of your home is?
