The Blessing of Being Still
Over the last few weeks, during my personal prayer time, the Lord has placed it on my heart to pray for peace. All we need to do is turn on the news for ten minutes to be reminded we live in a society shattered by violence and conflict. Whether it be in our local neighborhood or a distant nation, the unrest and tensions between people seem to be rising.
In an increasingly frenetic society, what are we to do? God tells us, “Be still and confess that I am God! (Ps. 46:11)” It seems counterintuitive, when the condition of society is crumbling around us, because our inclination is to do something. We busy ourselves with initiatives to protect our property and loved ones.
It is not wrong to be prudent and prepared for a tragedy. However, how often do we forget to confess that, without God’s strength, we are powerless? Psalm 46 reminds us that “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress (Ps 46:2).” When we still our souls and listen for His voice, He fights alongside us as we struggle to bring peace to our families, communities, and world.
Even if the hurricane of hate violently swirls around us, by focusing on the Lord, His love and protection draw us closer to him so that we can look with His eyes at the storm.
Take a deep breath, still our soul, and remember that God is in control. “Though the nations rage and kingdoms totter, God’s voice thunders and the earth trembles. The Lord of hosts is with us; our stronghold is the God of Jacob (Ps. 46:7-8).”
