Is the Pace of Technology Moving Too Fast?

A few weeks ago, I received a notification from my son’s elementary school stating, “Now that your child is in kindergarten, they will be issued a Chromebook and begin learning on computers. Please read and agree to our technology policy.”

I must admit, I was terrified. The internet is a huge network of ideas, thoughts, and content, and while the school takes precautions to keep children safe online, no policy can fully protect them from encountering objectionable and unsafe material.

In a conversation about it with my wife, I told her that I want to teach my son about the computer and the internet before his kindergarten teacher does. My wife agreed, so I intentionally sat down, created a parent-monitored Google email for him, set parental controls, and showed him how to use it.

I couldn’t anticipate what would happen when I asked my son to start typing an email. I suggested he begin by saying, “Hello Mami, I love you, and I hope you are having a great day.” Before he could finish typing the sentence, the Gemini AI bot took over, suggested a phrase, and he immediately said, “Oh there it is, I just need to find those letters on the keyboard.” My teaching moment in helping him compose a thoughtful sentence and practice his spelling was over.

I usually have my finger firmly on the pulse of technology and keep up with new developments; but in that moment, I have never felt more out of control. I’m flabbergasted that a simple AI tool could have such an impact on the lesson I wanted to teach my son.

However, God also reminded me to be grateful for Good News Ministries. The thought crossed my mind: “we just finished producing a Summit on Magnifica Humanitas and AI. I am so glad that our ministry addresses these real-world concerns for Catholic families because as technology changes and my kids grow up, I am going to need it.”

That thought gave me such peace, knowing that even if I can’t anticipate every challenge and issue, Good News Ministries is committed to helping families navigate the complex issues of our time. If you haven’t yet watched the summit I encourage you to watch the presentations on our YouTube Channel and if you find them valuable please support our ministry so we can continue to produce content and help families (like yours and mine) live Catholicism in this modern age!

May God Bless You and Your Families!

News from the Founder

In my retirement, I’ve been writing for the online magazine Those Who Mourn (among other new ventures). This month’s issue just dropped. My article is entitled “Receiving God’s New Wine After Loss.”

I reflect on the affects of loss — how it changes everything. Whether the loss comes through death, divorce, shattered dreams, or another life-altering event, we suddenly find ourselves living a life we never chose. We long for what was, yet God gently calls us toward what can be.

In one of His most intriguing teachings, Jesus uses the image of new wine and new wineskins to reveal how He compassionately leads us through seasons of painful change.

We’ve Got a New Video for You!
Surviving Life’s Twists and Turns

In this episode, Terry Modica talks with Marvin Wilmes, author of Rising Beyond Hope, about discerning God’s will through life’s unexpected twists and turns.

Marvin shares how experiences of loss, caregiving, career changes, illness, and ministry shaped his journey. Together, he and Terry explore the importance of surrendering to God, recognizing His guidance in circumstances, and being open to the “little callings” God places before us every day.

Perhaps you’ve prayed for guidance but still feel uncertain. Maybe well-meaning people have given you advice that doesn’t seem to match what God is placing on your heart.

If you are trying to figure out what God wants you to do next, this conversation will encourage you to trust Jesus and keep your heart open to His direction. Watch this episode to discover how God may be guiding you right where you are.
