Sowing good seeds

The Lord sends us out to spread his Word both in good and bad times, and to whomever crosses our paths. He doesn’t demand results nor a specific number of seeds to be planted, nor does He limit the amount of time we have available to do this work. He simply blesses us and says, “Go to the peoples of all the nations and make them my disciples.”

In our bags, we carry the best seeds we can get: the Word of God, the Life of God, the Strength of God. They come anointed with assured fertility: They can bear beautiful fruits on the vine that is Jesus.

Unfortunately, in our daily sowing, we often add one condiment: anxiety.

We know very well that planting the seeds that have been entrusted to us has to begin in our homes, which at times can be a difficult task, because, as Jesus said, “No one is successfully a prophet in his own land” (see Luke 4:24). But, if we truly want to follow Jesus, we do it anyway and we give it our best effort.

Often, the problem is that we want to see our spouse, son or daughter, in-laws, etc., accept our word joyously and change their attitudes, turn around bad habits or, as was the case with my children, grow up healthy and without problems. But, more often than not, this isn’t the reality.

When we decide to sow the Word of God in our families (although this is valid for all of the paths where God asks us to sow), we must pray not only for the family, but also for ourselves, so that we can be clothed with patience, tolerance, and the forgiveness that’s necessary for such a large task. Many times, our words will be devalued, ignored, incorrectly judged, taken out of context, and misunderstood. But it’s not our words that we’re sowing; we will be propagating The Word, which does not return to the Father without first accomplishing His mission.

In my family, my husband and I always tried to teach our children the Word of Jesus. In some instances, we thought that nothing took root, that the wind had taken everything, or that the devil was corrupting them. But it wasn’t like that, and God had the finesse to show us that, little by little, his Word was transforming, inviting, and conquering.

When it seemed that our efforts were sterile and nothing good would come from them, a small, tender, and beautiful sprout would begin to show itself, giving us hope. It’s in those moments that we regained our confidence and continued forward.

The seeds don’t arrive full of anxiety. We’re the ones who add the anxiety and a sense of having to rush. We’re the ones who tell seeds how, when, and where to sprout.

Seeds come with everything necessary to produce abundant fruits for the glory of our Creator. We should let them fall, die, and sprout! We’re not the ones that will make them germinate. The Divine Gardener will be in charge of making them into a beautiful Work of Art for the Lord.
