The Goal of Prayer
Have you ever felt spiritually stuck in the mud? Are you putting in a lot of effort to pray but not making much progress in your relationship with God? If so, you are not alone.
Recently, I raised this issue with my spiritual director, and he offered a keen insight: “Union with God is the ultimate goal. Prayer is a vehicle that can move us closer to union with God, but it is not the only vehicle.” He went on to explain that while prayer is crucial to our spiritual lives, when we feel stuck, we may need to shift our perspective.
He encouraged me to examine my day. As I detailed it to him, he pointed out several moments where I was cooperating with God’s grace, building the Kingdom, and spending time with God, without “praying” in the traditional sense.
Honestly, I had never reflected on the goal of prayer until my spiritual director brought it up. His insight helped me see God’s action more clearly in my life, ministry, and the world. It freed me from viewing prayer as just a daily task to check off, and instead, as a tool to grow closer to God.
Have you reflected on the goal of prayer? If not, I encourage you to do so this week. You may be surprised to find that a cup of coffee with a friend brought you closer to God, or that going on vacation with your family allowed you to draw nearer to the Lord.
Then, when you’re ready to take the next step and get “back in the vehicle of prayer,” I encourage you to visit GNM.org/prayers, where you’ll find a wealth of resources to help you grow in union with God.
