The Power of Forgiveness
On Sunday afternoon, I tuned into the memorial service for Charlie Kirk. I anticipated watching for just a few minutes, as Friday and Saturday were busy days filled with ministry work, and I needed some relaxing family time. But God had different plans. My wife spontaneously began steam cleaning the carpet in our living room, so I, after helping her move the furniture, retreated to my home office, thinking, “I’ll check out the memorial for Charlie Kirk on YouTube for a few minutes, then watch some sports on my office TV.“
However, as soon as I turned on the memorial service, I was riveted and could not turn it off – I watched nearly the entire 7-hour-long service. Worship song after worship song, eulogy after eulogy, the Lord was powerfully moving in the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ. As the attendees and viewers around the globe honored the Turning Point USA founder, the name of Jesus was glorified and uplifted almost unceasingly.
I was moved by the sheer number of politicians and activists who publicly proclaimed Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Clearly, each speaker at the memorial service was impacted by Charlie’s Christian witness, not just his political work, and many spoke about how he personally helped them find and grow in their Christian faith.
However, the most spiritually impactful moment was when Erica Kirk, tearfully, publicly, and without condition, forgave the young man who assassinated her husband. Her proclamation of forgiveness transcended the deep national political divide in America and witnessed to the power of living the Gospel of Jesus Christ with boldness and compassion.
We can transform this moment into a movement and bring about peace in our hearts, families, communities, nation, and world if we act as peacemakers, forgive others, and pray for our persecutors.
I encourage you this week to begin a revolution of forgiveness in your life by following Erica’s example and extending forgiveness to someone who has wounded you. Forgiveness has the power to change the world, and it begins with us.
