Persistence, the Key to Spiritual Growth
During October, we are continuing to pray for the protection of Good News Ministries. Throughout our newsletter articles and videos, we’ve been focusing our attention on the topic of spiritual warfare, encouraging you to pray actively for the defeat of evil in our homes and society.
Taking a proactive and offensive approach to spiritual warfare takes persistence because Satan never rests. St. Peter reminds us, “Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour”(1 Peter 5:8). To resist and defeat evil, we cannot give up the fight. Persistence in prayer, even when difficult, helps us grow in holiness and develop a close personal relationship with God.
The Gospel reading last Sunday was about the persistent widow who incessantly petitioned the judge for a favorable judgment (cf Luke 18:1-8). She won the favor of the judge because she never gave up. Persistence is the key to holiness, and it gives God constant access to work in our lives. When we return over and over again to sit at the feet of Jesus, he listens intently to our desires and needs. By spending this time in prayer with Him, we gain confidence in His plan for our lives and work to build His kingdom on earth.
Simply, when we persist in prayer, we grow closer to God, and he equips us for the daily spiritual battle. We cannot defeat the evil one if we are lackadaisical in our prayer. Our new resource, The Fearless Rosary: A Chaplet for Spiritual Boldness, which we released earlier this month, is a great tool to help you approach the throne room of heaven with confidence and boldness like the persistent widow.
This week, I encourage you to offer this chaplet for your personal intentions, the defeat of evil in the world, and the protection of Good News Ministries.
