Who needs to hear Good News? Anyone you know?
Saint Melito of Sardis (d.c.180), whose Feast Day was April 1st, said that “When a man turns away ever so little from error, the mention of the truth is acceptable to him. For, just as when the cloud breaks ever so little there comes fair weather, even so, when a man turns toward God, the thick cloud of error which deprived him of true vision is quickly withdrawn from before him.”
This means that evangelizing the people around us is not as difficult as it seems. We only need to find a way to give them a peek at the truth. My friend June does this all the time quite successfully. She makes strangers (for example, the staff in restaurants) feel special. And she asks how she can pray for them. She shows great excitement over whatever they tell her. When she returns, she announces with joy to her friends who each of those people are. She asks if the prayers have been answered yet. Inviting them to come to church flows naturally.
What’s the acceptable truth that nudges her targets toward God? Her joyful concern about them, which is the same as Jesus’ concern about them.
We all have loved ones who need to hear about Jesus in such a way that they are moved to turn their lives over to him. We all encounter people who need the truth that will set them free. But it’s very difficult to convince them, right?
That’s because they need to be primed for it first. They need to become dissatisfied with the way their lives are going and they need to know that there is an alternative that will make them feel great.
So think about this:
Do you know someone who is feeling hurt? Misunderstood? Or abandoned and alone? Are they ready to find healing? How can you raise their awareness that Jesus will make them feel great?
One thing you can do is share Good News Ministries content with them. For example, we have a music video that speaks to the heart and soul of those who are struggling with life, inviting them to turn to Jesus, at gnm-media.org/someone-cares-about-you.
In this Saturday’s Gospel reading, Jesus is telling you: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News.” You can do it very easily by sharing this video; post it on social media, send it by email and text message, and focus your evangelization efforts mainly on those who are feeling hurt, misunderstand, and alone.
