Get Out of Here!

 By Bill Snyder (Media Director)

One of my idiosyncrasies is that I enjoy watching when players and managers are ejected from baseball games. I even subscribe to a YouTube channel that keeps track of and breaks down each disqualification. I often watch the videos several times to examine and revel in the various expressions of discontent. If I am at a game when an ejection occurs, I’m usually the first person in my section to stand up and start cheering, and while I’m en route to a live baseball game, I often proclaim, “Maybe we’ll see an ejection today!”

Homeruns, wins, peanuts and crackerjack are all great, but watching somebody get thrown out for arguing the umpire’s call makes my trip to the ballpark extra special. My family and friends have asked me why I enjoy it so much, and my answer is always the same: “It’s because I love to watch the passion for the game spill out.”

No matter the specific circumstances that lead up to the ejection, there is one common denominator: The players and coaches love the game so much that they want to win at any cost. Everyone on the field has dedicated a lot of their life to the game of baseball and they don’t want to lose. So if they feel like they are being cheated by a bad call, things are prone to get heated.

Thinking about baseball ejections often leads me to ponder if I am doing enough to stand up for my faith in Christ. If I am all in for my faith, am I willing to passionately and publicly defend it? With the world watching and often rooting against my success and progress toward heaven, do I proudly and loudly state that Jesus is the Lord of my life? Do I possess enough zeal that when others call me crazy or non-compliant with their worldly ways, I can confidently reply, “Even if you throw me out of here, you aren’t going to shake my belief in the Lord.”

As Lent concludes and we head toward Holy Week, take some time to reflect upon your zeal for our Catholic faith and the ways you can express your love for Christ publicly.
