Clothed with Power from on High
Over the past few weeks at Good News Ministries, our staff has been intentionally praying and discussing the future of Good News Ministries. We’ve been brainstorming and having conversations about where we see the Lord moving in the Church under the new leadership of Pope Leo XIV and evaluating how GNM can use its gifts and charisms to serve the Church.
While it is impractical to detail all our internal conversations, it would suffice to sum them up by saying that we are excited about how the Holy Spirit is working to expand and equip disciples to bring the Body of Christ together. We also sense that Good News Ministries is uniquely poised to serve the Church during these times by spreading the Gospel through our diverse and deep catalogue of original online content.
In my personal prayer for Good News Ministries, the Holy Spirit prompted me to reflect on Luke 24:49: “And behold, I am sending you the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” As I reflected on this quote, I was particularly struck by the phrase clothed with power from on high.
Seeking a deeper understanding, I turned to my concordance to find that the Greek word Jesus uses for “clothed” in this instance is ĕnduō. It is defined as the sense of sinking into a garment; to invest with clothing. This is a powerful image. We know the feeling of wearing clothing that doesn’t fit well: it is uncomfortable and restricts our freedom to move. Conversely, when clothing fits perfectly, it feels as if we sink into it and become one with it.
Like a fitted dress, God wants to clothe us with the promise of His Father, the Holy Spirit. He knows your exact size and shape, and if we are patient and wait for him to measure us, we will receive power from on High tailored for us to do His will and spread the Good News in the world.
As we await Pentecost, let us prepare and pray for the Holy Spirit to clothe each of us and Good News Ministries with the power from on high and build the kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
