AI: What Are We Building?

It’s lots of fun when God takes over a project and evolves it into more than we are planning. This is what is happening to my course on artificial intelligence.

At first it was just a 4-video course on Pope Leo’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. I’m teaching this course in my own parish in July. My plan was to repeat it on video for Good News Ministries. But God’s plan is to make it much bigger. It’s now a Summit on Magnifica Humanitas and AI with guest speakers — Catholic experts in various fields of AI.

The program will be set as a playlist on our YouTube channel on August 14th (the Feast Day of St. Maximillian, Patron of Mass Communications). It will remain available afterward on our video website for those who cannot attend on the 14th.

We’re still finalizing the speakers list, but I can give you a sneak peak.

Stephanie Quesnelle will give a presentation on “What Are We Building?” She is the mother of five, a data analyst, and author of soon-to-be-released Created, Not Coded, the first Catholic children’s picture book about AI.

Stephanie says, “In Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo calls on Catholics ‘to reflect on the great “construction sites” of our era and ask: What are we building?’ This question doesn’t apply to just app developers and technology experts. Let’s reflect on our family culture and consider: What are we building?”

Magisterium AI

I also want to draw your attention to a fully-Catholic AI chatbot called Magisterium AI. It is very cool! It’s been trained on all Church documents, Scripture, the Catechism, papal teachings, and other Magisterial sources.

In experimenting with it, I asked it to tell me what the saints of the day were. Not only did it list a bunch of names, it also gave short bios of each Saint. Another feature I like is that it ties into the liturgical calendar. And this is just scratching the surface!

On Sundays, I visit my 95-year-old Mom and design a prayer service for her. It used to take me a couple of hours to plan it and find the right hymns on YouTube to go with each scripture. Last week I asked Magisterium AI to do the work. A few seconds later, it gave me everything I needed.

We cannot trust ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools for Catholic answers. Magisterium AI fixes that. You can use it as a stand-alone app in your phone. You can also connect it to your favorite AI app for research that needs to go beyond the Catholic faith.
