We All Need A Break
This week I am traveling with my family on vacation and visiting my in-laws in Puerto Rico. It is good to take a break. Other than doing a few minor tasks for Good News Ministries, I’m not working.
It’s hard for me to remember the last time I really slowed down and stopped, but a few weeks ago I made the decision that I would not work remotely while I travel, something I haven’t done in almost seven years. Last week I certainly had a busier-than-usual week preparing things ahead of time, but it has paid off this week.
Like a treadmill speeding up, the pace of society is getting faster and faster and we need to take time to calm down and center ourselves on what is most important – living out our personal vocation. All the work we do is important but it is not what is most important. At the end of my life I’m not going to reflect and say, “I wish I had spent more weekends working.” But not having enough date nights with my spouse or spending more time my kids will be huge regrets. Why? Because God has called me into this vocation and when I live it out to the best of my ability that is where I encounter His joy in our lives.
So take some time this week this week and unplug the treadmill. Live your vocation to the fullest. If you are still unpacking your vocation and what God’s will is for you in your life, we can help! Ever since I retired a year ago, I’ve had time to do works that I couldn’t squeeze into my schedule as GNM’s Executive Director. What a joy it is to be making podcasts weekly, teaching Pope Leo’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas at my parish, organizing the virtual Summit on Magnifica Humanitas and AI (to be released to the public on August 14th — have you signed up yet?), and writing for publication outside of Good News Ministries.
