The Power of Pilgrimage
I am writing this week’s newsletter while moving at 70 miles an hour and traveling on a two-day road trip to Houston, TX, for the National Catholic Charismatic Renewal conference.
As my longtime friend and brother in the Lord is driving us south, Jesus has been traveling alongside us in our conversations and discussions. This is a blessed and holy space. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “life is about the journey, not about the destination.” However, I think that the popular idiom is not perfectly accurate. I suggest that the phrase be modified to ” life is about the journey and the destination.” While living in the present moment is important, it is wise and worthwhile to walk the narrow path toward heaven and not wander.
Pilgrimages are a reminder to us of our journey and purpose in life, to be united with God in heaven. Whether it is a two-day drive to a conference in Houston, TX, the journey to a Marian shrine, or the week-long Camino to Santiago de Compostela, the goal is to achieve a deeper faith by setting a destination and working toward it step by step.
The destination helps us focus our journey. It allows us to be intentional with our actions along the way. We cherish the conversations we have and the people we meet because we are not concerned with fitting everything in or missing out on a popular tourist attraction. After all, they are not the goal of the pilgrimage.
We meet God in others, deepen relationships, and grow in holiness during the sacred time on a pilgrimage. I encourage you to make a pilgrimage; you don’t have to travel far, just be intentional. Gather a few friends, find a local shrine or basilica, and spend the day in prayer, reflection, and Christian friendship.
You’ll be surprised by the Holy Spirit in many ways.
