God is Light

As the days grow shorter in the northern hemisphere and winter approaches (I’m a little envious of those in the southern hemisphere this time of year), the darkness seems to creep up on us earlier and earlier each evening. I reside in Wisconsin and the shorter days are often accompanied by a blustery cool wind that reminds us to zip our coats before leaving the house.

We can sum it up by saying: We seek light and warmth. This can also be a metaphor for our relationship with God during Autumn. If you are anything like me, it seems easier to have a better relationship with God when it’s sunny and warm. Strolling on a warm beach and marveling at the majestic ocean while pondering His mercy is comfortable.

But those days are long past and we are bundling up and preparing for even darker and colder days ahead.

Perhaps in the craziness of reestablishing our routines and returning to school, work, and taking our kids to extracurricular activities we’ve forgotten our relationship with God and unintentionally shortened the warmth and light of God in our hearts.

If you resonate with this, I’ve got good news. “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all (cf 1 John 1:5).” So when we wonder how it got so dark so fast we can always turn to God, and He will bring us the warmth of His light back into our hearts.

But we can’t just stop there, Jesus tells us that when we’ve found God’s light we have to bring it to others. “Just so, your light must shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father (Matthew 5:16)”

One of my favorite sayings is: It is better to light one candle than curse the darkness. This week, I challenge you to live this saying. If you need the flame of God’s love reignited in your own heart, return to Him. Then carry His light into the world and light and show it to others so that they may be set ablaze.

If you need a daily reminder of God’s goodness and love, I encourage you to subscribe to our daily reflections if you haven’t already done so, because they can help keep God in your day even when it seems as though you are surrounded by darkness.

May God continue to bless you and your family!
