January 17 – Saint Anthony the Abbot

Saint Anthony the Abbot

Dear God in Heaven, Saint Anthony the Abbot renounced the world to attach himself only to You.  I ask for his prayers in my process of growing more in love with You.  Help me to deny myself and detach from this world.  I also lift up to his prayers all the people I know who are addicted to alcohol, drugs, human relationships, work, money, physical beauty and other enticements of the world.  Remove their crutches, Father, so that they fall into Christ’s healing hands.  Holy Spirit, make it plainly obvious that everything that is not of You is really harmful and a poor substitute for Divine Love.  Saint Anthony, pray for us.  Amen.

Quotes for Today

Saint Anthony of the Desert (251-356)
Founder of Christian Monasticism

quoteThe devil is afraid of us when we pray and make sacrifices. He is also afraid when we are humble and good. He is especially afraid when we love Jesus very much. He runs away when we make the Sign of the Cross.”

quoteThe vision of the holy ones is not fraught with distraction: ‘For they will not strive, nor cry, nor shall anyone hear their voice’ (Matthew 12:19, Isaiah 42:2). But it comes quietly and gently that an immediate joy, gladness, and courage arise in the soul. For the Lord who is our joy is with them, and the power of God the Father.”
