July 4 – Saint Elizabeth of Portugal
Lord of Love, Saint Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336) was married to a king, and her spiritual life was often interrupted by politics and family arguments. She regained her inner peace by spending time in prayer and doing works of charity. I ask her to pray for my family whenever we are quarreling, for my workplace whenever office politics interfere with getting the job done right, and for my church whenever infighting threatens the effectiveness of our ministries. Teach us, O Lord, to always run to You first in prayer and to serve each other with love in order to bring an end to divisions and political maneuvering. Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, pray for us. Amen.
Quotes for Today
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925)
Feast day July 4
True happiness… does not consist in the pleasures of the world or in earthly things, but in peace of conscience, which we have only if we are pure in heart and mind.”
The end for which we are created invites us to walk a road that is surely sown with a lot of thorns, but it is not sad through even the sorrow, it is illuminated by joy.”
We must always be cheerful. Sadness should be banished from all Christian souls. For suffering is a far different thing from sadness, which is the worst disease of all. It is almost always caused by lack of Faith.”
The prayer above is from Terry Modica’s book Daily Prayers with the Saints.
