The Power of Pentecost Within You
“On the morning of the third day, there were peals of thunder and lightning and a heavy cloud over the mountain, and a very loud blast of the shofar, so that all the people in the camp trembled. But Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stationed themselves at the foot of the mountain. Now, Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the Lord had come down upon it in fire (Exodus 19:16-18 NABRE).”
This scripture is one of my favorites, and it is often referred to as “The Great Theophany.” It occurs right before Moses climbs Mount Sinai to encounter God and receive the Ten Commandments. It reminds us of God’s awesome power and magnificence. In scripture, when God wants our attention, He does everything from parting the sea to walking on it. So why don’t we see these incredible signs and wonders of God in our own lives?
Jesus gave believers His power through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, “Amen. Amen. I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father (John 14:12).” So if we don’t see God’s action in our world, we need to examine ourselves first. Do you believe that Jesus can perform miracles through your hands and feet?
If you doubt that you’ve got the power of the Holy Spirit within you, here is what the Church states about the Sacrament of Confirmation: “It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost (CCC 1302).”
The same fire that descended on Mount Sinai and the Apostles at Pentecost entered your heart at your Confirmation. God has gifted you with His power to work miracles in His name.
