Find Blessings in the Waiting
To find your blessings while you are waiting, “Stay focused on whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
Here’s an inspiring testimony about someone who is doing this despite what could have been a very depressing disease. Listen to his “philosophy of how to have a happy life”.
His three keys to a happy life are also three keys to finding God’s blessings in times of waiting:
- Don’t waste energy feeling bad for yourself. Acknowledge the truth of how you feel, but put your energies into something positive. Stay busy in the calling that God has given you for today, and aim to keep making a difference for the kingdom of God every day in every circumstance. Whatever is available for you to do today, whether in a job you dislike or a situation at home that’s unpleasant or anything at all, do it as best you can. Today and every day, there is something you can do that is the opposite of waiting. It’s important to do things that feel like some sort of progress is being made, even though it is unrelated to what you’re waiting for. Keep your eyes on Jesus by offering what you can do as a gift for Jesus.
- Surround yourself with people who lift your spirits and are faith-filled. When you feel down, talk to them. If you are in a situation where you have to be with someone who drains you and disappoints you and drags your spirit down, counter this by getting together with people whose love for Jesus strengthens you and inspires you.
- Keep moving forward. Whenever you have an opportunity to influence what you’re waiting for, do it. Cover it in prayer first, but do it. Talk to your faith-filled friends about it for encouragement and guidance, and do it. And during the long waits between opportunities, reflect on the promises of God and the clues he has given you that are evidence that he is working a plan that will eventually bring an end to the wait.
